Feedback
from Caroline Flint meeting
Elizabeth
House, Stratford, 28th July 2008 Thank you everyone who spent their valuable time decorating the routes to and from Stratford and the ‘Middle Quinton’ site with posters / banners. I am sure when Ms Flint took her tour round the site she was left under no illusion that there was a high level of opposition to this proposal. Thank you too, to all those who braved the heat outside Elizabeth House, Stratford waving placards and banners when the minister arrived – your protest outside the council offices was an essential component of that whole day and I know Ms Flint will have noted our tone! The meeting between BARD, Parish Councillors and Ms Flint was felt to be ‘very necessary meeting, but generally not one where a great deal was learnt’ Ms Flint talked a lot and expressed her concerns that the site was ‘ugly and needed developing’. We replied that we agreed but not on the proposed scale and referred her to the St Modwen’s Master Plan. One of her primary concerns centred on housing targets especially those for affordable housing and if the eco-town didn’t meet them then finding local alternative options was essential. Further feed back from those present was:- ‘We were treated to a masterful display of meeting control by a minister who has her sights set on driving this agenda through’. ‘She did appear to listen to what we had to say but many of her responses to the questions (which she took in threes) were ‘political’ and often fell short of actually answering the question posed.’ Ms Flint did confirm that ‘if the plans put forward by the developers did not meet the very strict criteria that the eco-town policy needed they would not go ahead’ and ‘that all plans must go through local planning channels!’ We also learnt that the developers would shortly have to publish both a sustainability and financial appraisal of their proposal – these BARD can challenge during this next consultation phase. One of those present summarised as follows:- the score line at half time; Ms Flint ……5, Local campaigners ……4, but no own goals! Game
not over yet!
